Compact. Powerful. Handle?
In 2019 we developed a ultra-compact battery powered handheld vacuum. The major design guardrails being a slim and tidy form factor with incredible air performance and the ability to operate as the (removable) handle of a larger stand-up vacuum. The product was conceived and born in under 10 months and is available today. In 2021, the Hoover ONEPWR Dust Chaser won the Better Homes & Gardens Clean House Award for best handheld vacuum.
A significant portion of the design complexity stemmed from the requirement for the vacuum to be quite strong along the spine of the unit operating as the handle of a larger vacuum. Due largely to an accelerated program timeline, each iteration was simulated in favor of rapid prototyped as the loading was significant enough to require fiberglass-reinforced PA-66 (nylon). The side clam-shell housings are made of PC-ABS to fortify the handle cut-away and the top ABS fascia snap features are designed in a way to allow for minor deflection under heavy load without breaking or disengaging while keeping snug to the other housing pieces.
